The State of Victoria and the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria are the negotiating parties for Statewide Treaty.

Statewide Treaty

Victoria is currently negotiating a Statewide Treaty.

Victoria's statewide Treaty negotiations opened with a ceremonial event at Darebin Parklands on 21 November 2024. This follows close to a decade of preparation by the Victorian Government, the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria, and the Treaty Authority.

The negotiating parties

The State of Victoria and the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria are the negotiating parties for Statewide Treaty.

The State

The Victorian Government is represented by a delegation that includes senior executives from the Department of Premier and Cabinet.

The First Peoples' Assembly of Victoria

The First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria was established in 2018 and is the democratically elected body representing First Peoples in Statewide Treaty Negotiations.

The Treaty Authority

Negotiations are overseen by the independent Treaty Authority according to rules set out in the Treaty Negotiation Framework.

The Victorian Government is keeping Victorians informed as Treaty progresses. The government and the Assembly release regular Joint Statements to keep Victorians updated.
