A treaty is an agreement between two or more parties. Treaties between First Peoples and governments have been signed in many countries, like New Zealand and Canada.
Each treaty is unique. It’s based on the interests and needs of the negotiating parties.
We have learned from the treaties made in other countries, but we are negotiating a Treaty unique for Victoria.
Victoria's Statewide Treaty
In Victoria, we have been on the Truth and Treaty path for nearly a decade. We have passed legislation twice, developed policies, and made commitments across every level of government.
We are on this path because throughout our history, Aboriginal Victorians have been excluded from social and economic opportunities.
Why Victoria is on the path to Treaty on
Victorian government policies and practices created an opportunity gap that continues today.
Treaty will create a pathway to change what isn’t working.
Treaty is about making sure Aboriginal people get a say over their healthcare, their family's housing, their kids' education, and the practice of their culture, now and into the future.
Treaty will mean First Peoples and communities have the power to come up with and deliver practical solutions at a local level.
Laws and policies work best when people affected by them have a say in how they work.
Treaty will help us build a shared future and shared pride in the Aboriginal heritage of this land we all love, that is our home.
